Job Summary:
The primary role of the Genetic Assistant is to ensure that patients referred for a genetics evaluation and their families have access to the full array of genetic services offered by GGC. These services include clinical genetic evaluations, laboratory diagnostic services, genetic counseling services, and genetic educational information specific to the individual’s particular condition. The position will include assisting with scheduling, sample coordination, pre-authorization, pre-charting, assisting with clinical quality assurance reviews and billing activities associated with all clinical visit types, especially eConsults and eVisits.

Duties/Responsibilities:
· Communicate with referral sources as needed to provide information and easy access for genetic evaluations.
· Collect, review and summarize pertinent medical, educational, psychological, and social records once a referral is received.
· Communicate with patients and families to obtain past medical history, developmental history, and family history, to schedule eVisits and assist in the clinical evaluation, and to follow up on needed items associated with the clinical evaluations and laboratory testing.
· Communicate with insurance pre-authorization team for genetic tests, which may include assisting with drafting letters of medical necessity and letters for appeal.
· Prepare requisitions and package samples for laboratory testing.
· Locate and provide genetic educational materials and links to appropriate community resources for patients and families.
· Participate in the eVisit process and coordinate communication between the patient/family and the provider.
· Pre-chart for clinical visits and eVisits and assist in follow-up of testing results, which may include drafting result notes.
· Help refine workflow processes associated with eConsults and eVisits.
· Support clinical quality assurance program by conducting reviews of patient records to ensure the desired testing was completed, the patient was notified of the results, and to annotate any discrepancies needing correction.
· Oversee monthly patient recall process; send out recall notices and schedule patients based on their responses and appointment type preferences.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
· Proficient and comfortable with virtual, on-line communication mediums.
· Experience with EPIC electronic medical record or willingness to learn.
· Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
· Ability to work independently.
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s degree in sociology, biology, genetics or other health-related field.
· Professional work experience in a related field preferred.
· Background in counseling or medical assistant is desired.
Physical Requirements:
· Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
· Prolonged periods of periods of standing and bending.
· Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
