JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for repairing and maintaining various gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and other light-heavy duty vehicles. Performs related tasks such as road service calls, picking up parts, and preparing work orders. Reports to the Maintenance Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (examples, not all-inclusive)

· Performs repairs and general maintenance on City gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including police cars, passenger cars, fire trucks, utility service trucks, dump trucks, heavy-duty trucks, trenchers, jet machines, tractors, boring machines, generators, trailers, lawn mowers, and chain saws.

· Performs services on all vehicle component systems, including engines, emission control systems, fuel systems, ignition systems, starters, alternators, brake systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, clutches, exhaust systems, etc. Replaces tries as needed.

· Performs preventative maintenance and servicing duties such as changing oil and fluids, changing various filters, greasing, rotating tires, cleaning, and other routine tasks.

· Installs light bars for patrol cars.

· Responds to service calls and provides wrecker service.

· Performs SC inspection procedures.

· Receives, reviews, processes/submits documents and reports, including billing invoices, work orders, gas tickets, SC inspection forms, and gas reports.

· Utilizes and maintains equipment and tools in performing tasks such as mechanic's tools, engine diagnostic equipment, power tools, electric welder, pressure washer, and various mechanic's supplies and replacement parts.

· Picks up parts as needed.

· Repairs and fabrication on flower topiaries.

· Washes equipment and performs painting tasks as required.

· Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or equivalent with technical/vocational training in automotive mechanics and three to five years of related work experience as a mechanic or a closely related position or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities. Must possess a valid SC commercial driver’s license.

· Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered automobiles, other equipment, and related components and systems.

· Knowledge to diagnose mechanical problems and implement corrective action as necessary.

· Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and methods.

· Knowledge of chemicals used in operations to promote safe and effective handling of such agents.

· Knowledge of practices and procedures involved in performing major repairs and overhauls to equipment.

· Knowledge of trade terminology and principles.

· Ability to estimate time, materials, and supplies required to complete various tasks and repairs.

· Ability to prioritize work assignments and to complete such duties on time under deadlines.

· Ability to read, understand, and complete written requests and work assignments.

· Ability to utilize machinery, tools, and equipment to complete daily tasks effectively and safely.

· Ability to assist fellow employees as necessary.

· Ability to perform duties under adverse conditions such as heat, cold, odors, noise, humidity, and dust.

· Ability to apply common sense understanding in performing tasks.

· Ability to use independent judgment in routine as well as non-routine situations.


Working Conditions:

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in various weather and temperature conditions. Possible environmental factors include but are not limited to heat, rain, wind, and humidity.


Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate various machines, including various City machinery and equipment for repair and service. Must be physically able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are more than those for sedentary work. Work involves walking, standing, bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, stooping, etc., for varying periods. Must be able to lift and carry weights of one hundred to two hundred pounds.


Quality of Work:

Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies in areas of responsibility. Maintains high-quality communication and interaction with all City departments, divisions, co-workers, and the public.


Quantity of Work:

Performs described "Specific Duties and Responsibilities" and related assignments efficiently and effectively to produce a quantity of work that consistently meets the City's standards and expectations.


Dependability:

Assumes responsibility for completing assigned work. Completes assigned work within deadlines following directives, City policy, standards, and prescribed procedures. Remains accountable to assigned technical, human, and conceptual responsibilities.


Attendance:

Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to City policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management concerning vacation time and time-off requests.


Initiative and Enthusiasm:

Maintains an enthusiastic, self-reliant, and self-starting approach to meeting job responsibilities and accountabilities. Strives to anticipate work and initiates proper and acceptable direction for completing work with minimal supervision and instruction.


Judgment:

Exercises analytical judgment in areas of responsibility. Identifies problems or situations as they occur and specifies decision objectives. Identifies or assists in identifying alternative solutions to problems or situations. Implements decisions following prescribed and effective policies and procedures and with minimal errors. Accepts supervisory instruction and direction and strives to meet the goals and objectives of same. Questions such as instruction and direction are justified when clarification of results or consequences are justified, i.e., poor communications, variance with City policy or procedures, etc. Offers suggestions and recommendations to encourage and improve cooperation between all staff persons and departments within the City.


Relationships with Others:

Shares knowledge with managers, supervisors, and staff for mutual and City benefit. Contributes to maintaining high morale among all City employees. Develops and maintains cooperative and courteous relationships with department employees, staffers, and managers in other departments, representatives from organizations, and the public to maintain goodwill toward the City and project a good City image. Tactfully and effectively handles requests, suggestions, and complaints from other departments and persons to maintain goodwill within the City. Emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive image within the City. Interacts effectively with higher management, City Manager, professionals, and the public.


Coordination of Work:

Plans and organizes daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work following sound time-management methodology. Avoids duplication of effort. Estimates the expected completion time of work elements and sets a personal schedule accordingly. Attends required meetings, planning sessions, and discussions on time. Implements work activity following priorities and estimated schedules.


Safety and Housekeeping:

Adheres to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the City and various regulatory agencies by avoiding violating standards. Maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
