Description

Lander University’s Dr Walter Iriarte to Showcase Drone Cinematography at Lander Film Festival

GREENWOOD, S.C.—As the 15th anniversary of the Lander Film Festival approaches, Dr. Walter Iriarte’s presentation on the evolving role of drone cinematography in filmmaking is set to be one of the highlights. The assistant professor of digital media at Lander will provide an exciting talk about the changing role of drone cinematography in contemporary filmmaking. This event will take place on Wednesday, March 19 at 4 p.m. in Barratt Hall 126 on the Lander campus.

In his presentation, Iriarte will go into the evolution of camera technology over time, examining how it began as a tool for art and creativity before becoming influenced by computational, tactical and political factors in the context of drone technology. Drawing on his own pioneering work with drone filmmaking, Iriarte will demonstrate how drone cinematography, once seen as an instrument for military and surveillance purposes, is now reclaiming its artistic roots through creative exploration.

Through his ongoing projects, Iriarte challenges the established norms of drone film technology by pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. His work seeks to reframe how drones are perceived in the cinematic world, advocating for a return to a more creative and expressive use of aerial technology, rather than solely serving as a tool for strategic or tactical purposes.

The presentation promises to offer both filmmakers and enthusiasts a new perspective into the intersection of technology, politics and art. Iriarte’s presentation aims to inspire those in attendance to consider new possibilities in using drones not only as cinematic tools but also as innovative forms of artistic expression.

The Lander Film Festival week will start March 18 and will conclude with the Short Film Screening on Friday, March 22. Dr. Iriarte’s session will be one of the highlights of the festival.
